Elizabeth Feodorovna – Princess Hesse-Darmstadt; in marriage (with Russian the Grand Duke Sergey Aleksandrovich) – the Grand Duchess of the reigning dynasty of Romanov; the founder of the Saints Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy.


The brief description of life

The Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanova was born in the family of the Grand Duke Hesse-Darmstadt Ludwic IV and the Princess Aliсe, the daughter of Queen of the Great Britain, Victoria. In 1884 she was married the Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich Romanov, the brother of the Russian Emperor, Alexander III.

On April 13, 1891, at Lazarus Saturday, the rite of joining the Orthodox Church through the anointing was performed over Elizabeth Feodorovna. In the same year the Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich was appointed the Governor–general of Moscow.

The Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna was the most prominent figure in the circle of Russian philanthropists and patrons. You can innumerate of the charitable foundations and committees organized by her for a long time – there are hundreds of them. You can name the quantity of people who received assistance – hundreds of thousands of them. You can count all the personal donations of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna – these are millions. But the main strength was her compassionate heart. Formalism – as false doing – she never recognized in anything.

On February 4, 1905, the Grand Duke, Sergey Alexandrovich died from a bomb explosion by a terrorist revolutionary. At the hour of her ordeal Elizabeth Feodorovna asked God for help and consolation. On the third day after death of her husband, the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna went to the prison, to the murderer, asking him to regret and pray to the Lord for forgiveness.

Having been widowed, Elizabeth Feodorovna decided to devote her life to the Lord through the serving people.

February 10, 1909 (according the old style) – the date of the grand opening of the Saint Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy.

At the beginning there lived six sisters, at the end of 1909 - it was thirty of them; by 1918 – there were already one hundred and five of them.

On May 7, 1918, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna was arrested. On July 18 with the sister of the Convent, nun Barbara and the princes of the Imperial family of the Romanov dynasty, she was thrown alive into a mine, near the city, Alapaevsk.

The relics of the Martyrs Elizabeth and Barbara rest in Jerusalem in the Church of Equal-to- the Apostles Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives. In the Holy Protection Cathedral of the Saints Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy are held the particles of their holy relics are kept.
